Home improvement

Since Tommy was off work until Monday, December 29, we decided to spend our time off together on some home improvement projects we'd been talking about this fall. The biggest challenge was painting the living room blue. We had intended to paint it a nice, slate (grayish) blue but evidently I got carried away and (probably still feeling romantic from his Christmas gift to me) chose a blue that matches his eyes. This works quite well for his eyes but not so much for a rather large wall, as you can see...

So we had to fix it. We decided to try a faux finish technique: applying a darker gray with a flat finish over the bright, shiny blue with a sponge. That did the trick! After several coats of gray with the sponge, we achieved the look we wanted and better matched the curtains, rug, and furniture in the living room. Have a look...

...oh, and here's what it looked like before we started...

Tommy made me a custom hanger for the rug that we use as a wall hanging in our dining corner of the living room.
